
Stop Treating Your IR Lamps Like Lightbulbs
If you’re running PET blowing or thermoforming, you already know that energy is the one cost that always seems to creep up on you. Most shops just buy generic lamps, plug them in, and wait for them to burn out. They treat them like consumables—basically the same as a roll of tape. But that’s a mistake. Upgrading to high-grade infrared (IR) lamps isn’t about getting “better light.” It’s about how you move heat.
Getting the heat where it actually belongs
Here’s the thing: cheap lamps spend way too much energy heating up the air around your product. It’s a waste. High-quality short-wave IR lamps are different. They go straight for the polymer chain. We talk a lot about wattage and voltage (like 230V or 400V) because it actually matters for your consistency. High-voltage tubes let you run longer lengths without the power dipping. Ever notice how the lamps at the end of a long oven sometimes feel weaker than the ones at the start? That’s a voltage drop. With the right spec, every single lamp hits the same temperature. Period.
The gear that actually lasts
We use quartz glass and halogen cycles for a reason. The halogen keeps the tungsten filament from evaporating too fast, which means your tubes don’t turn black and die early. And if you use coated lamps? You’re basically tuning the heat to match your specific plastic. It cuts down your pre-heat times, which means you start making money sooner. Also, don’t overlook the connectors. We stick with R7s or Sk15 because they actually stay put. A loose connection creates a hotspot. Hotspots melt sockets. And nobody wants to deal with a melted socket in the middle of a shift.
The catch
Now, there is a trade-off. These high-density lamps put out a massive amount of heat in a tiny space. You can’t just toss them into an old oven and hope for the best. You’ve got to make sure your cooling fans and vents can handle the extra heat, otherwise, you might actually warp your machine frames. But once you’ve got the airflow sorted, the payoff is huge. Your cycle times drop. Your kWh per unit goes down. That’s where your actual profit lives.
