Let’s be honest: a lot of plants are paying a “brand tax” on their infrared heating. They stick with the big-name imports because that’s how it’s always been done. But here’s the thing—physics doesn’t care about a logo. Heat is heat. Lately, we’ve seen more people switching to domestic IR lamps for PET blowing and plastic molding. They slide right into the same slots as the expensive stuff, but they don’t drain the budget.
Let’s talk about the heat
When you’re picking a lamp, it all comes down to power density. If you go with a 400V high-voltage tube, you can cram more wattage into a smaller space. It’s a win. You get that intense heat flux needed to soften plastic fast, and you don’t have to rebuild your entire oven to make it fit. But a word of caution: if you’re running a 300mm tube at 2500W, you’re dealing with some serious energy. Make sure your cooling system can actually handle the heat rise. If it can’t, your filaments are going to burn out way sooner than they should.
The nitty-gritty on quartz and halogen
We use quartz glass for a simple reason: it lets short-wave radiation through without fighting it. Then there’s the halogen gas. It’s a clever little trick that pushes tungsten back onto the coil, which keeps the filament alive longer. For the connections, you’ll usually find R7s or Sk15 bases. They’re standard for a reason—they make swapping lamps during maintenance a breeze, so you aren’t messing around with custom jigs. Some of these also come with a special coating. It tweaks the emission spectrum so the plastic actually absorbs the heat instead of just bouncing it away.
How it actually works on the floor
In the real world, these domestic lamps do exactly what the premium ones do. They hit the same voltage, the same wattage, and they heat up just as fast. There is one small catch. The glass diameter tolerances can be a bit looser. You might find yourself tweaking your clips a tiny bit to get that perfect, snug fit. Once they’re locked in? They handle the heat cycles just fine. You get the same results, just without the overpriced invoice.
