
Why we put our bathroom lamps through the “steam torture” test
Bathrooms are basically death traps for heating elements. Think about it: one minute it’s freezing, the next it’s a sauna. You’ve got steam everywhere, random water splashes, and the temperature swings are wild. If a lamp isn’t built for that chaos, the seal gives out, moisture sneaks in, and the bulb pops. Just like that, it’s dead in a few weeks.
The breaking point
Most of these heaters use shortwave infrared quartz lamps. Quartz is fantastic for pumping out heat, but those spots where the glass meets the metal? That’s where the trouble starts. To make sure they actually hold up, we use damp-heat aging tests. Basically, we throw the lamps into a high-humidity chamber and crank up the heat. We’re trying to force moisture into any microscopic gap we can find. If the seal is off by even a tiny fraction, the tungsten filament oxidizes the second you flip the switch. We look for “blackening” or the filament just snapping. It’s not about making the lamp look pretty—it’s about making sure it doesn’t die the moment it hits a customer’s bathroom.
Dealing with the shock
It’s not just about the dampness, though. It’s the shock. Imagine a cold lamp in a steamy room suddenly blasting to full heat. The quartz tube expands fast, pushing against the metal housing. If it’s not handled right, you get stress fractures. We cycle the lamps through these extremes over and over. We want to see if the brackets warp or the electrical contacts start to corrode. If it breaks in our lab, that’s a win, because it means it won’t break in your home.
The honest trade-off
Here’s the thing: using high-grade quartz and obsessing over the seals costs more. Sure, you can find cheaper lamps that skip these tests. But you’ll end up dealing with a mountain of returns and annoyed customers. A lamp that’s been properly “aged” lasts way longer. Just remember, the hardware is only half the battle. You’ve still got to make sure your fixture has decent airflow. If the housing traps all that heat, even the toughest lamp will eventually hit its limit and burn out.
